TOKYO >> Japan announced today that it is leaving the International Whaling Commission to resume commercial hunts for the animals for the first time in 30 years, but said it would no longer go to the Antarctic for its much-criticized annual killings. Japan switched to what it calls research whaling after the IWC imposed a moratorium on commercial whaling in the 1980s,...

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Days after new planters were placed in the median along busy Highland Street, three of them were struck by a driver.  Sunday night, that new aesthetic literally took a hit after a driver’s car plowed through three of the planters.  FOX13 reached out to the University Neighborhood Development Corporation. We’re told each planter will be replaced.  FOX13 also learned the design for the crosswalk is still not finished and they’re working to add signage.  “I ride my bike around and I’ve almost been hit over here by this café several times,” Sherman said.   If the planters are replaced and sticks around, Sherman said he wants drivers to get used to slowing down.   “There’s a lot of speeding up and down here. It’s hard to cross the roads sometimes be...

Delta Systems Pushes the Boundaries of Automation in Packaging

Implementing Industry 4.0 technology does not happen overnight. It takes a series of adaptations to accommodate an ever-evolving environment. During the Automation World Conference & Expo earlier this month, where Industry 4.0 was a prominent theme, two technology experts from Delta Systems & Automation provided insight into how the company progressed on its 4.0 journey year after year. Delta Systems, part of Ilapak Group, is a manufacturer of build-to-order integrated packaging systems. Over the years, the company was faced with the challenge of how to embrace Industry 4.0 technologies, like the Internet of Things (IoT) without adding layer upon layer of complexity. “With Industry 4.0, there are too many communication protocols that we need to be engaged in,” said Brian Kyles, Delta Systems’ technical director, noting they could have an intelligent system with over 200 axis of motion, several PLCs and a dozen safety PLCs, plus over 20 unique devices all communicating across three different protocols using real-time Ethernet. “We needed someone to work with to keep us on the front end of this incoming industry push. We didn’t want to be the guys catching up. We...

The RW Takeaway: The men’s UA Rush Compression top kept us cool and energized—but we’re still

The RW Takeaway: The men’s UA Rush Compression top kept us cool and energized—but we’re still not sure if it’s because of Celliant fabric tech or the placebo effect. Energy return has been the focus of the latest arms race in the shoe market, with offerings like the Nike Next% and the Reebok Floatride Run attracting runners with lightweight, performance-driven designs. With the UA Rush Compression Sleeveless, the Baltimore-based company is calling upon their long history in the compression game to bring the energy return close to their chest—and abs and back. (We also covered the women’s Rush tank, a loose-fitting, open-back top, which pairs well with the Rush bra.) The new tech, developed by Celliant, claims to capture and redistribute energy burned during activity. As the body emits heat, mineral-infused fibers in the shirt capture said heat as infrared energy, which is then reflected back into the body. (It’s much better explained in this video). Layman’s terms: the shirt is designed to increase your stamina during each workout, which it does to varying degrees. The Rush does a decent job at ventilating and absorbing sweat, thanks in part to a V-shaped column of mesh panels ...

Live From the PGA Championship: CBS Sports, Winged Vision Debut New HDR Aerial Camera System in Goodyear Blimp

Flying in the skies above CBS Sports’ many technological innovations at the PGA Championship this week is a brand-new HDR camera system in the Goodyear Blimp. Created by Sports Broadcasting Hall of Famer Bob Mikkelson’s Winged Vision, the first-ever HDR aerial system for a live sports production features a Sony HDC-P50 box camera, Canon 4K 45-to-1 lens, Gyro-Stabilized Systems (GSS) gimbal, and Janteq microwave transmitter. Covering the PGA Championship at Bethpage Black, the Goodyear Blimp is equipped with Winged Vision, the first HDR aerial camera system for a live sports production. “The new camera delivers the best aerial pictures I’ve ever had, and, right now, I believe it’s the best aerial system that’s ever flown,” says Mikkelson. “What’s noticeable right off the bat is the sharpness at every pixel on the screen from corner to corner. It’s absolutely incredible.” Although the system is capable of 4K, it is running in 1080p HDR mode this week at Bethpage and is used for CBS’s 4K HDR production of Holes 16-18  and downconverted to SDR for CBS’s main broadcast. “This is the first time we’ve done HDR,” says Mikkelson, “and this new system is perfect for golf because HDR allow...

DWS, an Italian manufacturer of SLA (stereolithography) 3D printers and materials has selected Europac3D as their exclusive UK distributor. The partnership is a further step towards Europac3D fulfilling its strategic ambition of becoming a one-stop-shop for all 3D printing, scanning and design solutions within the UK. The DWS Systems produce parts that have an extremely high accuracy and superior part quality especially on small/medium detailed parts, making them well-suited to applications, such as jewellery, dental and complex industrial design. Furthermore the DWS systems use a technology whereby the laser shoots from underneath the resin vat which has two distinct advantages over traditional SLA technologies. First of all, because the part is drawn up out of the vat of resin it is only necessary to fill the tank with just enough material to build the parts and negating the need for large storage tanks of resin. Secondly, these small vats of resin can be easily switched out from one build to another allowing for complete freedom of material choice per build. The DWS entry level 3D printers have a cylindrical build volume of 180 x 180mm and come with a range of 12 different m...

Strong sales expected at Sarasota Suncoast Boat Show – News – Sarasota Herald-Tribune

Numbers are at pre-Great Recession levels, according to the National Marine Manufacturers Association. SARASOTA — From a distance, the crown jewel of this year’s Suncoast Boat Show doesn’t look much like a boat at all. When you approach it, it looks more like a two-story restaurant with sliding doors on the main floor, a luxurious outdoor lounge area and a roof deck up top. You might also forget that it’s a boat once you’re standing on it, because the floor literally does not move. The three-story, 84-foot long, 9,100-square foot yacht has five staterooms, each with its own king-sized bed and bathroom, a roof deck, a downstairs with plenty of space for a TV area and game room, and a chef’s kitchen in a living room where there’s more than enough space for big parties. There’s 4,700 square feet of air-conditioned space, it’s made of stainless steel, and the yacht plus all the furniture and accoutrements you see on it can be yours for just $12 million.  The Rendezvous 2018, a “mansion yacht” also known as the “cube” made by Cubic Yachts, debuted on Friday at the 37th annual Suncoast Boat Show. The event, which...

Best leggings: Hit the gym, street, studio or sofa in the perfect pair of leggings

Is there a more versatile item of clothing than a pair of leggings? Heading to the gym for an intensive workout? Throw on a pair of leggings. Stretching up a storm in a yoga studio? Slip on some leggings. Bingeing on a box set? Oh hi, leggings. And with high-waisted and leather-look options offering style as well as stretch, they’re a wardrobe workhorse. However, not all leggings are created equal and there are styles and fabrics that are better suited to working out than staying in. We’ve outlined the main materials and features to look out for below to suit your needs and budget. Whether you’re looking for an everyday pair to wear under dresses and oversized jumpers, on the hunt for high-performance workout gear or want to add to your athleisure-wear collection for a weekend of brunching, we’ve highlighted a selection of the best leggings currently on the market. This will depend on how active you’re planning to be. For everyday comfort, consider a soft, breathable cotton, which is both easy to wear and affordable to buy. Cotton doesn’t stretch too well though – and can lose its shape over time – so it’s wise to look for a pair that also features fibres such as elastane or Lyc...
