These devices work like a portable refrigerator, drawing power from AC or DC power (like the 12-volt plug in your car) to keep your food cool and dry. Ice is nice—until you do the math. For an ice chest to efficiently keep your perishables cool, you need twice the volume of ice as the volume of food and drink. That means, for most coolers, only a third of the available space can be used for supplies; the rest needs to be devoted to ice. Enter the electric cooler, which functions like a portable refrigerator or freezer that plugs into your car, a generator, or a large portable battery. These devices don’t need ice, so nearly the entire interior space can be used for your comestibles. I say “nearly” because you need to leave gaps between items so air can flow amongst the brisket and brewskis. Usually, the different shapes of the items naturally create enough space between themselves to let the cold air circulate. Both designs share the same off-grid problem: the coolant, whether ice or electricity, will run out at some point, ideally not before you’ve consumed all the food and drink or before the trip ends. My family and I recently tested a few ice coolers alongside some electric ...

Low tyre pressures will increase fuel consumption and can also cause your car to handle and brake

Low tyre pressures will increase fuel consumption and can also cause your car to handle and brake poorly. So it’s a good idea to pick up a compact air compressor for you to check and top them up at regular intervals. Here are ten of the best on offer. This is one of the most popular compressors around – and justifiably so, thanks to the fact that it’s so easy to use. All you have to do is to connect the air line to your tyre’s valve, dial in the desired pressure and then hit start. The compressor will then run, pumping the tyre up to the desired pressure. Other benefits include an integrated light, a digital display, a neat transport case and a long 3.5-metre 12V cable. A one-year warranty is standard. It’s a smart buy, particularly if you have a second car that rarely moves and needs its air topping up before a drive, or if you have an outdoor hobby like cycling, camping or water sports. Ring RAC635 Preset Digital Tyre Inflator, Air Compressor Tyre Pump, 3 Min Tyre Inflation, LED Light, Carry Case, Valve Adaptors, 12V Tyre inflators powered by a 12V socket all well and good but avoiding getting the cables and hoses hung up on things can be a bit of a chore. Also, if you want to...

Adventure Filmmaker Mike Hoover’s 1968 Attempt to Run North America’s Wildest River

So perhaps it’s not surprising that Hoover survived the summer of 1968, when he was 25 and went to Alaska intending to make a film of himself and a friend attempting the first descent of one of the most forbidding wild rivers in the world.  Hoover grew up in Southern California, keen to do things people told him he couldn’t. He idolized Harry Houdini, the great escape artist. He considered changing his name, as Houdini had, swapping “Mike Hoover” for “Roger Hummingbird.” As a kid, he escaped into books; as a teenager, into the outdoors. He climbed the epic routes of Yosemite and raced motorcycles over fire roads in the mountains above Los Angeles. He was constantly hatching plots on the wrong side of the law with his best friend, Robert “Sandy” Bredin, an agile high school wrestler who lived just down the street in Pacific Palisades. Hoover once stole a golden eagle from a zoo in Thousand Oaks. He parked the bird in Bredin’s garage, then surreptitiously returned it to the zoo when he realized it was too mature to train. Film had intrigued Hoover ever since the father of one of his roommates at Occidental College set up a 16-millimeter projector in their dorm and showed some foot...

Drinks company spends £1m on alcohol-free distilling plant at Robinson’s brewery

YPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd”> Drynks Unlimited, which makes 0.05% ABV beers and ciders, has completed a £1 million investment in a cool vacuum distillation (CVD) kit. The group says will help to improve the quality of its alcohol-free brews and make them taste “as good as full-strength beers and ciders.” There are currently only 20 CVD kits in operation around the world. Drynks Unlimited said this is the first distillation kit of its kind to operate in the UK. The Manchester-based company is partnering with Robinson’s brewery in Stockport to build and connect the kit to its existing brewery. David Bremner, marketing director at Robinson’s Brewery said Drynks Unlimited’s “stealth focus” on producing alcohol-free drinks “perfectly complements our brewing history and expertise.” “Our no and low sales are up 51% this year and this trend is set to continue through innovation in flavour and dispense.” The CVD process removes alcohol from drinks “without affecting the flavour and aromas in the original, fully alcoholic beer and cider”, according to a statement from Dry...

Bathing a baby can be intimidating for even seasoned parents—they’re so squirmy, snuggly, and yes, slippery

Bathing a baby can be intimidating for even seasoned parents—they’re so squirmy, snuggly, and yes, slippery when wet! Your best bet? Be prepared before you start by gathering bath gear ahead of time, so you can focus on bathing baby safely. Baby bath tub: This can be as basic as a baby bath bucket or as complicated as a tub system with built-in water thermometer. What’s right for you is what works for your taste, budget and space (baby tubs hog up a lot of room under the sink). Most infant tubs have a limited life—baby will only comfortably fit in them for the first six months or so, when she’ll graduate to bathing in the big girl tub. Wash cloths: Small and convenient—and easy to lose in the laundry, so stock up from day one. Use washcloths (or a sponge) to soap up and wipe down baby. Cotton, bamboo or muslin options work best, and are easily washable. Bath towel: Keep multiple towels handy in case of big splashes. And a hood is a must, especially for newborns. Wet babies lose heat fast, and mostly through their heads, so keep your little one bundled up and cozy post-bath. Baby soap: Whether you trust old school faves like Johnson & Johnson’s, or aim for organic everything,...

Q&A: Building Design Shifts Toward Wellness Architecture

The U.S. Green Building Council has inarguably changed the course of the real estate industry and has done so for the better, mobilizing the masses around the idea of environmentally responsible construction. Buildings these days feature more than attention to sustainable construction and practices meant to help save the planet, they commit to factors that greatly improve people’s health and comfort, such as ample daylight and better indoor air quality. LEED certification has graced developments from all over the world since 1998. Additional programs such as WELL, Fitwel, the Living Future Institute’s Living Building Challenge, ParkSmart or SITES complement LEED’s standards. However, a building’s green features are not always the result of such a certification. Dwayne MacEwen, principal & creative director of DMAC Architecture in Chicago, and Samantha McCormack, creative director at New York’s TPG Architecture, presented their views on the connection between architecture, good business and the well-being of both the planet and the people working in their buildings.  McCormack: We are seeing increased demand from clients across the board in reducing their carbon footprints—b...

The average FDM 3D printer is not so different from your garden variety laser cutter. They’re often both Cartesian-coordinate based machines, but with different numbers of axes and mounting different tools. As [Gosse Adema] shows, turning a 3D printer into a laser cutter can actually be a remarkably easy job. The build starts with an Anet A8 3D printer. It’s an affordable model at the lower end of the FDM printer market, making it accessible to a broad range of makers. With the help of some 3D printed brackets, it’s possible to replace the extruder assembly with a laser instead, allowing the device to cut and engrave various materials. [Gosse] went with a 5500 mW diode laser, which allows for the cutting and engraving of wood, some plastics and even fabrics. Unlike a dedicated laser cutter there are no safety interlocks and no enclosure, so it’s important to wear goggles when the device is operating. Some tinkering with G-Code is required to get things up and running, but it’s a small price to pay to get a laser cutter on your workbench. We’ve seen [Gosse]’s 3D printer experiments before, with the Anet A8 serving well as a PCB milling machine. is it really that hard to modify 3d...

Flight attendants reveal their weirdest experiences on board

While planes may appear to be a place to get some sleep and relax, for others they can be utilised as a dressing room, bedroom and even an exercise studio. Flight attendants and pilots, from all over the world, have revealed their weirdest experiences while on a plane, from a woman boarding with curlers in her hair to another doing yoga in the aisle and a man using a sanitary towel as a sleep mask.  They exposed the bizarre occurrences on planes travelling between Seattle, London, Tokyo and other major cities on social media site Quora. Flight attendants and pilots have revealed the weirdest experiences they have had while travelling on international flights (stock image) Writing about their on-board experiences, one former flight attendant revealed how on a flight from San Francisco to London Heathrow a woman boarded looking as though she was ready for bed. ‘During boarding a woman came on with curlers in her hair, no make-up wearing sweats,’ wrote Kevin Barrett, who worked on airlines between 1987 and 2007. ‘She came out as we were getting ready to prep for landing. She was fresh faced, make up, hair perfect, heels and hose, beautiful dress and all. One stewa...

Ron Rezek, a car collector, said his Bentley that was made in 1929 and is one

Ron Rezek, a car collector, said his Bentley that was made in 1929 and is one of three that still exist around the world. “Using parts from the original car, a previous owner reconstructed it as a race car post-WWII. Purchased in 2016 as a non-running vehicle, the car was re-bodied as an accurate replica of the 1929 Le Mans-winning Bentley Speed Six, one of Bentley’s most famous race cars,” said Rezek. Blue Nelson, a car collector, said his Porsche used to belong to one of the first women race car drivers in the 1950s. 90919 Series Small Coil Rubber Boots “When I got the car I knew that it was a competition car because of the roll bar, fire extinguisher, special brakes, and performance motor. I didn’t quite realize how profound of an impact she had on racing, especially being a woman. Later on, the Porsche Club Archives sent me an article showing she had won 22 major races up to 1964 then she still raced it after that,” said Nelson.
