Trying to avoid plastics? Here are some ways to cut back arrownoalt facebook twitter instagram rss

ORLANDO, Fla. – By now, you’ve probably heard about the dangers of plastic exposure. More than 4,000 chemicals are used in plastics and many of them are toxic. From food containers to baby toys, plastic items are everywhere. They may be cheap and convenient but they’re also bad for your health. In a recent study, scientists used cell cultures to examine the effects of chemicals in plastic items. They found three out of four of the products they examined contained toxic substances and some of them couldn’t even be identified. Plastic chemicals in polyvinyl chloride and polyurethane were the most hazardous. Even products made from green alternatives, known as bioplastics, contained toxins. Bath Sponge Suppliers for Sale While some plastics are easy to steer clear of, others can creep their way into your daily life. Some sneaky items that are made of plastic include yogurt cups, bath sponges, coffee cup lids, tea bags, canned foods, some paper cups, chewing gum, glitter, the microbeads in certain kinds of toothpaste and facewashes and even clothing items. Researchers in this study say it’s nearly impossible for consumers to know whether a plastic product is safe, as they all contai...

Maximus launches Answer Dualcam smart doorbell with two cameras

If you’ve ever been frustrated by a visitor or delivery landing just outside the field of view of your video doorbell, Maximus has come up with a solution for you – the Answer DualCam. The smart doorbell, first shown off at CES back in January, boasts not just your typical wide-angle camera, but also a second camera at the doorbell’s bottom, giving further visibility and field of view. This means that, according to Maximus, you should be able to see what you’re looking for, whether it’s a person or a package. You’ll, of course, be notified of movement or bell-rings according to your preference, too. That top camera films 1080p wide-angle HD footage, while the bottom camera is, more ambiguously, simply ‘HD’, according to Maximus. The two feeds will play on your screen at once, producing a split video, like that pictured below, covering most angles. As you’d expect from a current smart doorbell camera, the Answer DualCam also features an infrared night-vision option, as well as a “music-quality” front speaker, to ensure that visitors or door-knockers can actually hear your responses. If you’d prefer, you can r...

Each of the pre-selected families also received a helmet and associated gear with the free bikes, including anti-theft locks. Officers from the Pasadena Police Department were on hand during the distribution to make sure each bike’s serial number and the new owner’s name were recorded, in case of future theft. That didn’t mean it was overrun with Great Danes, beagles or mutts; just that it was an ideal place to try out your act. “If you put meat in front of the dog and the dog won’t eat it, nobody else should eat it. So if a play or musical event didn’t work in Scranton, it probably wouldn’t work in New York or anywhere else,” said Ro Hume, a new American citizen — she was naturalized in February after moving here from her native Australia — who recently wrote the narrative for a REV Theatre Co. production called “Scranton Vaudeville.” You can take in the free performance 2 p.m. Sunday at the United Neighborhood Centers’ Oppenheim Center for the Arts, 1004 Jackson St., in West Scranton, where you can admire the talents of some professional performers as well as local young people and older adults who have been working with REV Theatre’s artistic directors Rosemary Hay and Rudy Caporaso. The production will showcase some Scranton theatrical history as well as songs from hearken back to vaudeville’s heyday. “Toot, toot, Tootsie, good-bye. Toot, toot, Tootsie, don’t cry. The choo-choo train that takes me away from you, no words can tell how sad it makes me …” You’re probably not old eno...

Hot forming complex, high-strength aluminum parts The FABRICATOR STAMPING Journal The Welder The Tube and Pipe Journal The FABRICATOR en Español The Additive Report The FABRICATOR The Welder The Tube and Pipe Journal STAMPING Journal The Additive Report The FABRICATOR en Español

The first of its kind in the world, AP&T’s scalable production line for hot forming of high-strength aluminum offers new methods for manufacturing lightweight car body components. To meet increasingly strict government requirements regarding CO2 emissions, the automotive industry has been working for many years to reduce fuel consumption of newly manufactured vehicles by reducing their weight. New materials, designs, and manufacturing methods have made possible lighter parts and components. Press hardening of sheet steel has been vital to the progress made so far. As this technology continues to improve, other materials and material combinations have been developed, such as high-strength aluminum. While considerably lighter than steel, this material has entailed high costs and presented some forming challenges. In 2013 AP&T began to investigate the development of a new process for hot forming of complexly designed parts made of high-strength aluminum. During the following three-year period, the company worked with customers, universities, and suppliers on testing the material, production processes, and equipment. The result in 2016 was an initial prototype line and a nu...

One of the nice things about a road trip is you often get to see something

One of the nice things about a road trip is you often get to see something that really surprises you. A recent trip through Texas may have resulted in my second most surprising sighting. There’s a strange tower that looks oddly like a Tesla tower in the middle of rural Texas, right off the main interstate. What is it? Although Google did answer the question — sort of — I’m still not sure how legitimate its stated purpose is. I was driving between Wimberly and Frisco — two towns that aren’t exactly household names outside of Texas. Near Milford, there’s a very tall structure that looks like a giant mechanical mushroom on top of a grain silo. If the mushroom were inverted or pointing towards the horizon, it would be easy to imagine it was some very odd antenna. This dish, however, is pointed right down its own odd-shaped mast. The top of the thing sure looks like the top of a Van de Graf generator. Of course, Google found a wealth of information on it. I’m not sure if I totally believe it or not, though. But the Van de Graf generator guess might not have been far off. The tower belongs to a company called Viziv Technologies. They claim they are doing experiments to transmit energy...

TheDrive and its partners may earn a commission if you purchase a product through one of our links. Read more. Imagine being stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic on a brutally hot summer day when, unexpectedly, your car’s AC stops blowing cold air. Not only is this going to make your drive unbearable until the issue is resolved, but who knows how much it would cost for a mechanic to fix? Luckily, these top kits are the best way to recharge a car AC. Air conditioning in cars was initially offered as an aftermarket add-on in the 1930s. It wasn’t until 1939 that the first car manufacturer started to provide it as an option, with others following shortly behind. The original refrigerant used was called R12. These systems were eventually replaced in the 1990s due to emission regulations. They are still available on a limited basis for drivers who own vehicles older than 1995, although restrictions will be outlawing them altogether by 2020.  When emission concerns started to get regulated more carefully, a new air conditioning refrigerant was developed. R134a systems have been used in vehicles for the past two decades. These systems are much more efficient than their predece...
