CES 2020: Preview of tomorrow’s tech on show in Las Vegas

How much tech can you take? Next week aims to stretch your horizons, as well as your credulity, as thousands of new products are launched and demoed at the giant CES expo. Artificial intelligence, 5G, foldables, surveillance tech, 8K and robotics are set to be among this year’s buzzwords. But also expect Trump to feature. The President’s clashes with China have led some of the communist country’s biggest tech firms to cancel or reduce their involvement in the Las Vegas event. But the prospect of an imminent trade deal points towards tensions easing and greater access to Chinese consumers. Ivanka Trump – the US leader’s daughter – is also attending to give a “keynote” interview to CES chief Gary Shapiro. Now Mr Shapiro faces criticism himself for inviting Ivanka to discuss “the future of work”. Critics claim she is benefiting from nepotism while better-qualified female tech champions are overlooked. Apple’s privacy chief Jane Horvath is making a rare public appearance. It’s the first time her company has formally been involved in CES since it hawked its Newton handheld back in 1992. In addition, ex-Hewlett Pa...

March 6th Options Now Available For HSBC Holdings (HSBC)

<!–*/ */ /*–>*/ Investors in HSBC Holdings plc (Symbol: HSBC) saw new options begin trading today, for the March 6th expiration. At Stock Options Channel, our YieldBoost formula has looked up and down the HSBC options chain for the new March 6th contracts and identified the following call contract of particular interest. The call contract at the $38.00 strike price has a current bid of 43 cents. If an investor was to purchase shares of HSBC stock at the current price level of $37.62/share, and then sell-to-open that call contract as a “covered call,” they are committing to sell the stock at $38.00. Considering the call seller will also collect the premium, that would drive a total return (excluding dividends, if any) of 2.15% if the stock gets called away at the March 6th expiration (before broker commissions). Of course, a lot of upside could potentially be left on the table if HSBC shares really soar, which is why looking at the trailing twelve month trading history for HSBC Holdings plc, as well as studying the business fundamentals becomes important. Below is a chart showing HSBC’s trailing twelve month trading history, with the $38.00 str...

Announced alongside the G5X Mark II, you may at first glance not be able to tell

Announced alongside the G5X Mark II, you may at first glance not be able to tell the two cameras apart. They both share a long list of features in common, but the G7X Mark III has a short list of very specific additions that clearly position it as a vlogging camera and separate it from the G5X II’s more “all around” companion camera design. The G7X Mark III is the same size as the previous generation model, but weighs 14 grams less than the Mark II and features the same 24-100mm-equivalent f/1.8-2.8 lens. Furthermore, the Canon G7X III also looks very similar to its predecessor, save for some minor styling changes. It maintains the lack of a viewfinder and keeps the small, pop-up flash on the left-side corner of the top deck. When it comes to the imaging pipeline, the G7X III uses a new 20.1 megapixel 1.0-inch stacked CMOS sensor which is coupled to Canon’s DIGIC 8 processor (an upgrade over the DIGIC 7-powered G7X Mark II). That stacked CMOS sensor is another improvement over the Mark II iteration of the camera, enabling enhanced performance features, such as full-res 20 frames-per-second bursts in high speed shooting mode (using fixed focus, one-shot AF...

Video Premiere: Draag Submerges Listeners in a Pool of Ominous Bliss on “Trauma Kit”

One of the cornerstones of music is the idea of vulnerability — a theme that surrounds the music of many artists who wish to share their stories, whether they be joy-filled or not. It’s by allowing for one to be vulnerable that new avenues can open up, showing different sides to each story and coming out all the better for it. California-based band Draag aims to accomplish just that with their latest single “Trauma Kit,” a song filled with swirling shoegaze melodies that both uplift and haunt. To accentuate the experience, the band made the accompanying music video, showcasing just how intense shower thoughts can really be, and we at Atwood Magazine are proud to be premiering it today! What first began as a solo project of Adrian Acosta’s creation has now blossomed into a euphoria-rich band consisting of Jessica Huang, Nick Kelley, Ray Montes, and Shane Graham. With all of their talents merged, the band excels as creating soundscapes of horror but also of hope as they sing and discuss issues surrounding hopelessness, isolation, and fear. They take parts of ambient and shoegaze as their base, leading to a flurry of dreamy melodies that intoxicate with an unmatched fervor. “Trauma...

There’s a good chance Bluetooth technology is a regular part of your mobile experience these days. It covers everything from audio for wireless headphones and speakers, pairing gaming controllers and keyboards, tethering internet connections, and even occasionally transferring files over the air. It’s a feature that gets more useful every year, which is pretty remarkable considering how relatively limited its scope was when it was created over 20 years ago. The Bluetooth standard was originally conceived by Dr. Jaap Haartsen at Ericsson back in 1994. It was named for a renowned Viking and king who united Denmark and Norway in the 10th century. At the time, it was designed to replace RS-232 telecommunication cables, a much older standard conceived in 1960, by using short range UHF radio waves between 2.4 and 2.485 GHz. Although this occupies very similar frequencies to Wi-Fi, Bluetooth has always been designed as a much shorter range and lower power alternative. In 1988 the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) was formed, which to this day publishes and promotes the standard and its subsequent revisions. Bluetooth SIG initially only included Ericsson, IBM, Intel, Nokia, and Tos...

A new decade brings forth new ideas, but for much of this year’s Consumers Electronics Show

A new decade brings forth new ideas, but for much of this year’s Consumers Electronics Show in Las Vegas, it was less about innovation and more about restoration. Buzzwords like “connectivity” and “self-care” were seen and heard throughout the three-day event, which took over the Las Vegas Convention Center and a number of adjacent hotels. From Sony to Samsung, brands spoke about their desire to “bring people together,” unveiling products that promised to make life easier, happier, and less chaotic. And while development of artificial intelligence, VR and robotics continues at a rapid pace (there were entire sections dedicated to AR), even those technologies are taking a decidedly more human point of view. Look no further than LG, where the company’s president and chief technology officer unveiled a roadmap for artificial intelligence development that highlighted four levels of AI experience (AIX): efficiency, personalization, reasoning and exploration. The future, it seems, is not just about discovering new roads but also about smoothing out the path you’re already on. From smart glasses that actually work with your wardrobe to 8K TVs that showcase movies in a whole new light, ...

Westwood Hills puts its clients’ minds and bodies at rest

YPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd”> Ed Bixby, owner of Westwood Hills Memorial Park, said the area’s natural beauty and options offered to customers have made the business a success. Democrat photo by Dawn Hodson There probably is no more peaceful place in El Dorado County than Westwood Hills Memorial Park. Located in Placerville, it is the picture of a beautifully maintained cemetery. Recently purchased by Ed Bixby, who owns four other cemeteries in other parts of the country, the cemetery has been in business for 70 years. Bixby said he thinks one big reason for its success is that the former owners capitalized on the area’s natural beauty and had a keen eye for creating its parklike setting with open hillsides and a variety of trees. Open every day from dawn to dusk, it’s a welcoming place for everyone, with Bixby inviting people to enjoy the place regardless of whether they have someone buried or interred there. An attraction of the cemetery, besides its natural beauty and immaculate upkeep, is that it offers many burial options. Bixby said people can choose a nat...
