5 Stylish Swedish Cleaning Tools You Should Be Using | Real Simple

Over the past few years, Scandinavian-inspired everything has been having a moment—in home decor, in fashion, and yes, even in cleaning products. It’s perhaps no surprise that minimalist Scandi style goes hand in hand with a clean, decluttered space, and so even Swedish cleaning tools are functional, attractive objects worthy of display. Rather than cheap plastic tools that get hidden in cabinets and stashed inside closets, invest in these durable and (dare we say) stylish cleaning essentials that you can leave out in the open. In fact, you may even want to show these beauties off.  A cross between a sponge, a dishcloth, and a paper towel, these reusable Swedish dishcloths are ultra-absorbent, will mop up every spill in your kitchen, and can be cleaned in the dishwasher. Plus, they’re biodegradable.  You can’t talk about Swedish cleaning tools without mention of Iris Hantverk, a maker of luxury home goods that are conceptualized by top designers and assembled by craftspeople who are visually impaired. Crafted using techniques that date back to the 19th century, these Swedish cleaning tools stand the test of time.  One Iris Hantverk classic: this tiny (it’...

Forget Black Friday: iPhone 11 and 11 Pro are on sale right now – here are 3 great deals

The iPhone 11 is one of the hottest gadgets this holiday season, but Apple isn’t the place to go shopping for iPhone deals. The iPhone 11 might be more affordable than we imagined, starting at $699, but the Pro models are priced much higher, starting at $999 (11 Pro), and $1,099 (11 Pro Max). Thankfully, there are ways to score a cheaper iPhone 11 such as installment plans, upgrade programs, and trade-ins. If that’s how you were planning to buy an iPhone 11 this year, then you absolutely should check out the following three iPhone 11 Black Friday deals. And the best part about it is that you don’t have to wait until November 29th to get them, as Best Buy, Sam’s Club, and Target have early sales for Apple’s newest iPhones. Best Buy’s iPhone 11 deal is included in the company’s early Black Friday sale event, and it’s available right now. What you need to do is choose an iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, or iPhone 11 Pro Max, activate it on AT&T, Sprint, or Verizon, and trade-in your existing phone. You can save up to $500 on the three phones. The deal is valid through November 10th and requires an in-store visit. It will then return on Black Friday. Sam’s Club is hosting a special one...

Who Deserves the Blame for the Arizona Cardinals Weaknesses?

The Arizona Cardinals have made vast improvements since last year’s 3-13 showing, but no 3-5-1 team is devoid of critics. Fans and analysts can be notoriously harsh when things aren’t going perfectly. So, I thought it would be good to go through the most heavily criticized Arizona Cardinals in 2019 and say my peace as to whether those criticisms are valid or not. Johnson has been a confusing player to watch this year. In the receiving game he has been as electric as ever, showcasing some of the trademark highlights that made him an All-Pro in 2016. But he has also struggled to have the impact in the running game that led to his 1239 rushing yards and 16 rushing touchdowns in 2016. To top that off, the effectiveness of Chase Edmonds and Kenyan Drake make it even more difficult to absolve him of his struggles this year.  Edmonds ran all over the Giants for 126 yards and 3 TDs, and Kenyan Drake went for 110 rushing yards on an eye-popping 7.3 YPC against the vaunted 49ers defense. David Johnson has failed to rush for 100 yards in a game all year, and even his most adamant supporters are running out of excuses for the lovable running back. All of this being said, Johnson is an uber-...

While I love reviewing new floorstanding super towers from RBH Sound, I also recognize in-walls represent

While I love reviewing new floorstanding super towers from RBH Sound, I also recognize in-walls represent a big chunk of their Custom Integrator business. Let’s face it, not everybody has the space to accommodate a pair of Signature reference towers in their listening space or those that do simply can’t replicate the same speaker setup as a surround channel. But, what if there was a way to get Signature level of performance without having the big hulking box? RBH Sound has an entire line of Signature in-wall speakers that are up to the task, such as their SI-6100 and SI-663 LCR speakers. But with the advent of immersive audio, it was time for them to introduce an in-ceiling speaker at the quality level of the rest of their Signature in-wall line. The SI-615 in-ceiling speakers feature a 6-1/2” aluminum cone woofer and a ¾-inch pivoting ring-radiator tweeter.  The speaker has a great sensitivity rating of 88dB (2.83V @ 1 meter) and the 6 1/2″ driver boasts bass extension down to 50Hz (-3dB, free air).  There is a o/- switch on the tweeter mount that allows you boost the treble if desired. RBH claims the SI-615 is primarily designed to be used for in-ceiling chan...

How old beer cans helped Constellium crack open North America AN-LOGO-BLUE AN-LOGO-BLUE

MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. — Billions of used beer and soft drink cans are the magic ingredient in Dutch aluminum supplier Constellium’s strategy for getting more aluminum into North America’s vehicles. Never mind who is out there drinking that many beers and soft drinks every year. It’s part of a supply chain equation that Constellium has worked out to raise its share of the U.S. market for automotive aluminum. In 2010, the North American demand for flat-rolled automotive aluminum was about 100,000 tons a year. By 2025, annual demand will be 1.4 million tons, Constellium forecasts. According to a widely cited market research study published two years ago by Ducker Worldwide, the use of aluminum will grow by 168 pounds per vehicle, to an average of 565 pounds, between 2015 and 2028. Automakers want lighter cars and trucks. Aluminum is a clear way to achieve that, as Ford Motor Co. did in 2014 when it remade its F-150 pickup with an aluminum body, dropping 700 pounds and signaling to the industry that a new era had arrived. But incorporating more aluminum means suppliers have to make more automotive- grade aluminum in North America. That means creating more aluminum-sh...

Avoiding Carsickness When the Cars Drive Themselves

If the future lets people focus on work instead of driving during the daily commute, many of us will have to conquer motion sickness to read memos (or tweets). Researchers are working on some fixes. The day is approaching when commuters stuck in soul-crushing traffic will be freed from the drudgery of driving. Companies are investing billions to devise sensors and algorithms so motorists can turn our attention to where we like it these days: our phones. But before the great promise of multitasking on the road can be realized, we need to overcome an age-old problem: motion sickness. “The autonomous-vehicle community understands this is a real problem it has to deal with,” said Monica Jones, a transportation researcher at the University of Michigan. “That motivates me to be very systematic.” So starting in 2017, Ms. Jones led a series of studies in which more than 150 people were strapped into the front seat of a 2007 Honda Accord. They were wired with sensors and set on a ride that included roughly 50 left-hand turns and other maneuvers. Each subject was tossed along the same twisty route for a second time but also asked to complete a set of 13 simple cognitive and visual tasks ...

Best Shoe Stretcher, Shoe Stretch Spray 2018: Foot Matters | The Strategist

Every product is independently selected by (obsessive) editors. Things you buy through our links may earn New York a commission. I have wide feet that are slightly different sizes (as most people do, even if they don’t know it). I also don’t wear flats, so the joy of buying shoes has always been tempered by the dread of breaking them in. Until recently, I simply accepted that my first couple of experiences with most footwear would end with blisters, numb toes, pain, and/or, on a few occasions, dirty feet from giving up and going barefoot for the final stretch. Last month, I impulse-ordered some almost comically impractical heels that turned out to be so tight and generally uncomfortable that I decided to return them, only to realize that they were final sale. In an effort to begin what I expected to be a particularly miserable breaking-in process, I wore the shoes to meet a friend for dinner in my neighborhood. When I explained why I was hobbling, she said, “Oh, you just need that stretching stuff.” For those who, like me, were not aware: That stretching stuff is a spray that uses diluted alcohol to soften the stiff fibers in new shoes, allowing you to loosen them up using your ...

Firefighting Back-to-Basics: Standpipe Tool Kits, Part 2

Last month we started to explore what makes up a standpipe or high-rise tool kit. There were some other tools or pieces of equipment that can be added to the kit that we did not discuss last time and we’ll consider this month. In photo 1, you will see a different type of standpipe kit bag being used as opposed to the one pictured last month. There is no standard bag that needs to be used for the kit, but it needs to be practical and useful for the intended purpose. The bag pictured in photo 1 is a smaller type of bag that will accommodate the required tools and equipment needed for standpipe operations. Using a bag that is too long and too large will only hinder the firefighter who is trying to carry it up flights of stairs or into a large box building. Having a smaller bag will be ergonomically efficient for the operation. In photo 2, we can see some of the other equipment that can be added to the standpipe kit. Starting at the right, we can see the 45-degree elbow. This piece of equipment is useful for the transition from the standpipe outlet to the hose system. It allows the hose to come off the standpipe outlet at an angle that will prevent kinking. It also allows for extra ...

New Study Shows Coffee Maker Reservoirs Often Contain Yeast, Mold

If you’ve ever looked at your coffee maker, thought about cleaning it, and then proceeded to not go through with it, I feel you. But fellow coffee enthusiasts, this is a wake up call: Your coffee machine could be one of the dirtiest parts of your kitchen if not cleaned often, so disinfect that beauteous appliance immediately. Bacteria, yeast, and mould could be growing in your machine because of irregular cleaning, and those little devils don’t discriminate – it doesn’t matter whether you have a coffee pot, a Keurig, or a fancy espresso machine. Not sure about you, but I prefer my coffee with a splash of milk and not a splash of bacteria. The part of the machine that stores water — AKA the reservoir — is the biggest culprit of disgustingness. A National Sanitation Foundation International study found that half of the coffee reservoirs they tested contained mould and yeast. These may lead to allergic reactions or infections, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The study also found coliform, which is a strain of bacteria that can indicate Salmonella and E. coli, in some machines. No thanks! The intense heat from the machine will kill some of the bacteria, but it’s ...
